FAMOUS EXPLORERS Who were the Famous Explorers? Christopher Columbus (1451-1506): Italian explorer o He was sent by King Ferdinand & Queen Isabella of Spain. o He took the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria as his ships. o He came to an island he named San Salvador. John Cabot (1450-1499): born in Italy, sailed from England o Made the first English land claim in North America when he landed in Canada Vasco da Gama (1460-1524): Portugese explorer o Wanted to travel to India. He went around Africa to get there. Juan Ponce de Leon (1474-1521); Spanish explorer o Discovered and named “La Florida” Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521): born in Portugal, sailed for Spain o Named the Pacific Ocean (Pacific means “peaceful”) o He died on the journey, but his crew made the first trip around the world. Sir Francis Drake (1540-1596): English explorer o Robbed a ship to get lots of silver and other prizes Jacques Cartier (1491-1557): French explorer o Explored parts of Canada, and named a mountain “Mont- real”. Samuel de Champlain (1567-1635): French explorer o Discovered a lake that was over 100 miles long. It was named after him.
