THE ABOLITIONIST MOVEMENT What do you know about the Abolitionist Movement? The Abolitionist Movement started with the denunciation of slavery by the Quakers of Pennsylvania, a religious community of believers in equality and peace. After their public resistance to slavery, many other groups of people joined their fight for the abolition of slavery. Both slaves and non-slaves participated in this movement and publications that informed people of the movement were created by blacks and whites alike. One component of the Abolitionist Movement was the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad provided safe travel for fugitive slaves wanting to escape their owners. This secret movement was successful in freeing many slaves during the Abolitionist Movement. By 1804, the northern states had abolished slavery, but the south still resisted the movement. Still, those who considered themselves abolitionists did not stop their fight, continuing to spread their message to the South. Despite the positive reactions to the Abolitionist Movement, there would be more fighting before slavery was abolished. Many think that the Abolitionist Movement was one of the main causes of the Civil War. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
