PLANTS Plants are living things. What are the Parts of a Plant? Let’s go from the bottom to the top. ROOTS The roots help keep the plant in the soil so it doesn’t blow away in the wind. The roots also take in water and other important things from the soil that the plant needs to grow strong. Different types of roots: o Some roots are one large root. o Other roots have many tiny roots that go out in many directions underground. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Let’s check what we have learned so far: What is the job of the root of a plant? Let’s move up the plant a little more now… THE STEM Stems carry water and other important things taken up by the roots to the leaves. Stems also provide support for the plant it helps the plant stand up straight and tall so that it can reach the sunlight it needs. Time to move up the plant even more… THE LEAVES Green plants make their own food in their leaves! Leaves come in many different shapes and sizes. All the way to the top of the flower now… © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Permission is granted for the purchaser to print copies for non-commercial educational purposes only. THE FLOWER The flower makes seeds so that the flower can make new flowers. Flowers come in different colors, shapes, and sizes. Let’s check what we have learned so far: In what part of the plant does a plant make its food? Tell Me More About How Flowers Make NEW Flowers: Yellow, sticky pollen on a flower needs to be moved from one flower to another flower so that flower can make seeds to grow new plants. Bees help move pollen from one flower to another. Pretty colored petals help attract bees to a flower. Every seed is a tiny plant with leaves, stems, and root parts waiting for the right things to happen to make it germinate and grow. The fruit that grows on plants has seeds inside them! When those seeds fall to the ground, they grow into new plants. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. A Plant’s Life Cycle A plant's life cycle is how long a plant lives or how long it takes to grow, flower, and make seeds. All plants need water, air, and warm temperatures to grow. Let’s Look at the Plant Life Cycle: seed seedling young plant adult plant Who Needs Plants? EVERYONE! Plants give off a gas called oxygen which is what we (and animals) need to breathe in to live. Animals also eat plants, which helps keep them alive. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. There are two MAIN kinds of plants: 1. Flowering plants 2. Non-flowering plants (these plants make spores instead of seeds) Let’s check what we have learned so far: Why do we need plants? © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
