How Does a Seed Grow? 1. The seed is planted and gets enough water and room to grow. 2. A small root grows down into the soil from the seed. 3. Then, the stem grows up toward the top of the soil. Then the stem breaks through the soil as it grows. When the stem grows and begins to develop leaves, it is called a seedling. 4. Then it grows into an adult plant.
