THE SKY The Sun The Sun is a large, hot ball of gas. It is a star. The Sun is BIGGER than the Earth. Everything in our solar system moves around the Sun. The Sun is the center of our solar system. What Does the Sun Give Us? The Sun gives Earth light and heat. Living things need the Sun to live! The Sun gives Earth sunlight that is needed by plants to help them grow and make their own food. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Animals eat plants to get the energy the plants got from the Sun. Don’t Get Too Much Sunlight Too much sun can be bad for your skin because the Sun gives off harmful rays too. You should wear sun block outside on a sunny day. Wear sunglasses, too, to protect your eyes. Fantastic Fact The sun’s rays shine on the moon at night. This makes the moon bright! © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Permission is granted for the purchaser to print copies for non-commercial educational purposes only. The Earth The Earth is the third planet from Sun. The Earth revolves around the Sun. This means it moves in a path around the sun. What Causes Day and Night? As the Earth moves around the Sun it turns. This is called its rotation. Earth rotates ONCE each day. This rotation causes night and day here on Earth. The sun lights one side of Earth at a time. When it is day on one side of the Earth, it is night on the other side. It is day on our side when the side of the Earth we live on is facing Sun. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. The Moon The moon moves around the Earth. The moon is not a planet. Earth has one moon. Some other planets have no moons, some only have one moon, and some have many moons. The Moon Changes Because of the way the Moon circles the Earth and reflects the light of the Sun, we can see a different amount of the Moon each night. These changing of its look is called the Moon's phases. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Stars A star is a hot ball of gas. Stars give off light. The Sun is a star. Planets A planet is a large object that orbits around the Sun. Orbit means to move in a path around something. Planets do not give off light. They just reflect sunlight. Reflect is when light touches and then bounces off of a thing. There are 8 planets in our solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. Pluto used to be considered a planet but it is now known by scientists as a dwarf planet. The Telescope A telescope helps us see stars. It is a tool that makes things that are far away look close. Even the closest stars and planets are very far away from Earth. A telescope helps us learn more about them. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. What is the Solar System? The solar system is the sun, all planets, their moons, and other objects in space. Everything in the solar system orbits (revolves or moves around) the Sun. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
