What Is Reading and Writing Numbers to Trillion? The number system we use is based on a place value system. Although there are only 10 different digits in this system, it is possible to order them in so many variations that the numbers represented are infinite. The number 4 by itself simply represents a value equal to 4 (∆ ∆). The number 40, however, represents 10 times 4 and 400 represents 100 times 4. Each digit in a number has a place value: Ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, 10 thousands, 100 thousands, millions, 10 millions, 100 millions, billions, 10 billions, 100 billions, trillions Large numbers often appear in science and social studies texts, newspaper and magazine articles. For instance, the population of the United States is over 300,000,000 and many athletes make $1,000,000 or more each year.
