GIVING CHANGE FROM ONE DOLLAR What Is Giving Change? Change is the money you receive back when you purchase an item and give the cashier more than the item cost. How to Figure Out Change To figure out the change you will receive from a purchase, simply subtract the total amount of the purchase from the amount you are giving the cashier. For example: You pick out a new notebook for school and it costs $0.45. You give the cashier $1.00. To figure out how much change you will receive, you need to subtract 45¢ f rom $1.00. $1.00 - 0.45 $0.55 You would receive 55¢ in change. Another example: You decide to buy a pack of gum for 73¢. You give the cashier $1.00. How much change will you receive? Again, to find out the amount of change you will get back, you need to subtract 73¢ f rom $1.00. $1.00 - 0.73 0.27 _ Try This! Figure the amount of change received in each of the following problems. Molly chooses a pack of stickers for 47¢. She pays the cashier with $1.00.
