TELLING TIME What is Time? Time is the measurement of how long it takes to do different activities like playing a game, doing your Math homework, or riding your bike. A clock measures time. It helps us know the time. Time is measured in hours and minutes. A clock has two basic parts: the face and the hands. The face of a clock has numbers 1 12 all around it. There are two hands to a clock: o hour hand (short hand) o minute hand (long hand). o They are called hands because they point to the time just like your hands can point to things. How to tell time: The short hand tells you the hour. This clock shows us the time is at the 3 hour. The longer hand tells you the minute. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved. This clock shows us the time is 3 o’clock (of the clock) because the minute hand is pointing to the 12. When the longer hand is pointing to the 6, it means it is half past the hour. This clock is showing it is 3:30. When it is half past the hour, the hour hand will be between numbers. Whenever this happens, always use the number that comes before. This clock is showing that it is half past the hour. The hour hand is half way between the 4 and the 5. This means that it is 4:30. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
