DETERMINE APPROPRIATE STANDARD OF UNITS What Are the Standards of Units? When measuring objects or distances, there are certain measurements of length, distance, weight, and capacity that should be used. There are customary standard of units and metric standard of units. How to determine the standard of units: When measuring length or distance, units such as inches, feet, yards, and miles are used in customary measurement. Millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers are used in metric measurement. When measuring weight, the customary measurements are ounces, pounds, and tons. The metric measurements for weight are milligrams, grams, and kilograms. The customary measurements for measuring capacity are teaspoons, tablespoons, fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons.
