COMMUTATIVE PROPERTIES Using the Commutative Property in Addition Using the Commutative Property in addition means that the order of addends does not matter; the sum will remain the same. Order Properties: When you change the order of addends you do not change the sum. Example: 3 + 6 = 9 6 + 3 = 9 You try! If the sum of 13 + 5 is 18, what is the sum of 5 + 13? If your answer is 18, you are correct! Using the Commutative Property in Multiplication Using the Commutative Property in multiplication means that the order of factors does not matter; the product will remain the same. Ordering Properties: When you change the order of factors you do not change the product. Example: 8 x 5 = 40 5 x 8 = 40 You try! If the product of 23 x 4 is 92, what is the product of 4 x 23?
