FOUR-DIGIT ADDITION How can you add four digit numbers? Example: 4,547 + 2,736 Place the first four digit number above the other four digit number so that the thousands, hundreds, tens and ones places are lined up. Draw a line under the bottom number. 4547 +2736 Add the ones place digits (7+ 6 = 13). This number is larger than ten so place a one above the tens place column and place the three below the line in the ones place column. 1 4547 +2736 3 Add the tens place digits (1 + 4 + 3 = 8) and place the answer below the line and in the tens place column. 4547 +2736 83 Add the numbers in the hundreds place column (5 + 7 = 12) and place the two below the line.
