LIBRARY SKILLS What Can Be Found in a Library? Books, almanacs, DVD's, atlases, magazines, newspapers, dictionaries, and encyclopedias can be found in a library/media center. Library Facts 1. Most libraries are divided into areas, called sections: • The Stacks………..fiction and nonfiction books • Periodicals……….magazines and newspapers • Reference…………encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, and almanacs • Catalog……………..online catalog or card catalog drawers 2. In the library stacks, nonfiction books are shelved separately from fiction books. 3. Fiction books are separated by genre and are arranged alphabetically according to the author's last name. 4. Each nonfiction book is assigned a call number. Call numbers for nonfiction books are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal System. 5. Online catalogs and card catalog drawers contain title cards, author cards, and subject cards for each nonfiction book in the library.
