TEXT FEATURE What are Text Features? Using a Map A map is a drawing created to represent the world or a part of the world's surface. A map may include the following features: Symbols are used to represent the features shown on maps. A legend lists the symbols used on the map and tells us what the symbols mean. A compass shows north, south, east, and west on a map. An index helps you locate specific places such as cities and streets on a map. A scale on a map helps you measure distance between two places. Reading a Newspaper You can read a newspaper to find out information about your town, city, state, country, and the world. Newspapers have certain text features such as headings, captions, side bars, and fine print. What is a Heading? A heading is the title of an article that is often written in large print. A well written headline will often grab your attention. What is a Caption? A caption is a short summary describing a picture or drawing. What is a Sidebar? A sidebar is a story or parapgraph that accompanies the main story, detailing a particular detail that is related to the story. A sidebar may be placed on the side, within, or at the end of an article. What is fine print? The fine print of an advertisement is information written in a much smaller font than the rest of the advertisement. Fine print often includes drawbacks of a deal or sale at hand. Using a Textbook Textbooks are nonfiction books that are used to study of a particular subject. Textbooks have a table of contents so that you may find particular subject topics easily. Try This!
