Study Guide Summarizing English Language Arts, Grade 4

SUMMARIZING What is Summarizing? When you summarize you take a large selection of text and condense it to just the main facts or ideas. A summary is significantly shorter than the actual text. Summarizing helps you focus on the MOST important points or ideas of a story or article. Important Tips to Remember When Summarizing: Before writing a summary, it is a good idea to organize the main ideas of the text in a logical order first. When summarizing, you should focus on the main idea of the WHOLE article or story. When summarizing, don’t include TOO many details. Your summary should be written in your OWN words, except for key words. Your summary should be written in COMPLETE sentences. When you have finished writing a summary, you want to double check that you have included all the important ideas. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
