R CONTROLLED VOWELS We know that the vowels a, e, i, o, and u can have a short or long sound. But when a vowel is followed by the letter r its sound changes. Look at the AR family. In each of these words the a seems to be silent because you just say “r.” AR bar, car, far, jar, par, tar, barn, darn, yarn, farm, harm, army, charm, alarm, star, start, sharp Be careful -- the ar in these words has a different sound: war, warm, warn, warning Look at the OR family. In each of these words you say a little word you know, “or.” OR ore, bore, core, more, nor, pore, sore, tore, born, corn, horn, thorn, morning, normal, fork, pork Look at the IR, UR, and ER families. They all have the same sound!
