Study Guide Poetic Devices English Language Arts, Grade 4

POETIC DEVICES What is Alliteration? Alliteration is the repetition of the beginning consonant sounds in two or more words. Example: David drove down Delaney Drive. This sentence is an example of alliteration: the consonant D repeats in the first letter of words throughout the sentence. What is Rhyme? When two words have a similar sound, they are said to rhyme. Example: Green and bean rhyme with each other. Rhyme is a popular device used in poetry. Many poems do rhyme, however poems do not have to rhyme. What is Repetition? What is Repetition? (You just read an example of repetition!) Poets and writers often repeat a word, phrase, or a particular sound throughout a poem or story. This is called repetition. Repetition is often used in poetry to emphasize a point. Try This! Which poetic device is being used here: The pretty, peppy puppy was a perfect pet. a] rhyme b] repetition c] alliteration © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
