LITERARY GENRES A genre is a particular type of literature. Poetry Many poems have a rhythm and a meter. Rhythm is the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. Meter is the measured arrangement of words in the lines or verses in a poem. There are many types of poems, such as haikus, ballads, sonnets, free verse, and limericks. Poems do not always need to rhyme. Drama A drama presents the actions and words of characters on a stage. A play is a literary form of drama. Letters There are several types of letters including friendly, business, and persuasive letters. A friendly letter is a personal letter written to a friend or family member. There are several parts of a friendly letter: Heading - your return address and the date you are writing letter Greeting - your greeting, saying hello (Example: Dear Sarah,) Body - your main message of your letter Closing - your ending, saying good bye (Example: Sincerely,) Signature - signing your name, so the receiver knows who sent the letter A business letter is a formal letter used to write a business or company. Advertisements Advertisements try to persuade you to buy a certain product. You may see advertisements in newspapers, magazines, among many other places. Advertisements sometimes stretch the truth or exaggerate to make whatever it is they are selling seem more appealing. They often use large, colorful pictures to grab the reader’s attention. Historical Fiction Historical fiction books are those that give a historically accurate portrayal of life during a particular time in history while telling a story using fictional characters. Historical fiction books contain accurate facts or dates. Biographies A biography is a story of a person's life written by another person. If you decided to write a book about the story of the life of your best friend, the book you write would be a biography. Autobiographies An autobiography is the story of a person's life, written by him or herself.
