Study Guide Drawing Inferences English Language Arts, Grade 5

DRAWING INFERENCES What are Drawing Inferences? Drawing an inference is the act of drawing a logical conclusion based on the facts written in a text, a reader’s background knowledge, and a reader’s personal information. When reading, you can use clues in the story AND your experiences to make an inference about what you think is going on in a story. You may not read a certain fact, but you can infer that the fact is true by reading the facts and clues the author writes in the text. When you make an inference, you make your best guess about what happened in a story, why something happened in the story, or what is going to happen next in a story. Example: Emma hid under her covers, closed her eyes tightly, and hoped the noise would stop. She thought she heard the noise coming from her closet. What can we infer about how Emma feels? We can infer from the clues in the paragraph that she is scared. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
