CONTRACTIONS What is a Contraction? A contraction is really two words squeezed together to make a new word. Some of the letters from one or both of the words go away and a special mark called an apostrophe goes in their place. Examples: Do + not = don’t (Notice that the o in ‘not’ is gone. The apostrophe takes its place.) Can + not = can’t (One n and the o are gone. The apostrophe takes the place of both.) It + is = it’s (The apostrophe takes the place of the i in ‘is.’) They + are = they’re (The apostrophe takes the place of the a in ‘are.’) We + will = we’ll (The apostrophe takes the place of wi in will ) Will + not = won’t (The ill in ‘will’ is gone and the o moved. The apostrophe takes the place of the o.) Try this! What is the contraction for are not? ___________________ What is the contraction for we are? ___________________ What does they’re mean? ___________________________ What does didn’t mean? ___________________________ © Copyright NewPath Learning.
