CONTEXT CLUES What are Context Clues? When you are reading, you will come to words you do not know. You can learn the meaning of those words by looking for the clues in the sentence around that word. The clues will help you understand the meaning of the new word even if you cannot pronounce it! In each of the following sentences, the underlined word is not real. But you can use the clues around it to practice for times when you need to understand real words. 1. Pick up all of your clothes and hang them in the tchep. The underlined word could be a ____ horse, towel, closet Hints: It could not be a horse or towel because you would not hang clothes in them. It is a closet. 2. I fell over the chair and got a bump on my glugger. What is a glugger? shirt, tail, elbow Hints: You cannot get a bump on a shirt. You do not have a tail. It must be your elbow. 3. I do not know how to swim so I will take swimming nuthers in the summer. What are nuthers? Pools, pictures, lessons Hints: You would not take pools anywhere.
