VOWEL DIGRAPHS What are Vowel Digraphs? Vowels are a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y or w. When 2 vowels come together in a word that is a vowel digraph. Examples: ai, au, ay, aw, ea, ee, ei, ey, ew, ie, oa, oe, oi, oo, ou, oy, ow, ue, ui, Regular vowel digraphs make the long sound of the first vowel. The second vowel is silent. Remember, “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” Examples: rain, day, tea, bee, key, tie, boat, toe, too, dough, blow, due, juice Some vowel digraphs make a new sound.
