SOLVING SIMPLE PROPORTIONS A proportion is a statement that two ratios are equal. 2/5 = 4/10 A ratio is a pair of numbers used to show a comparison. 5 out of 7 = 5/7 To solve a proportion, calculate equivalent fractions in order to be sure the two fractions (ratios) are equal. How to solve simple proportions: When solving proportions, think equivalent fractions. For instance, 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8 Because any number times one is itself, any fraction times one is itself (an equivalent). The number 1 can be written as any fraction in which the numerator and denominator are the same: 2/2, 6/6, 12/12, 50/50, etc. To calculate an equivalent fraction, multiply by one. Decide on the fraction equal to one by determining the multiplication factors for the new denominator needed. 5/8 = n/24 8 X 3 = 24 Choose 1 = 3/3 Multiply 5/8 X 3/3 5/8 = 15/24 2/5 = n/30 5 X 6 = 30 Choose 1 = 6/6 Multiply 2/5 X 6/6 2/5 = 12/30 © Copyright NewPath Learning.
