PREFIXES What is a Prefix? A prefix is any letter or group of letters that is added to the front of a base word to change the meaning. Here is a list of some prefixes that change the meaning of a word. The prefix re- means to do again. Wrap changes to rewrap. The prefix un- means not, or the opposite. Happy changes to unhappy. The prefix dis- means not, or the opposite. Obey changes to disobey. The prefix pre- means before. Test changes to pretest. The prefix sub- means under. Way changes to subway. The prefix bi- means two. Cycle changes to bicycle. The prefix tri- means three. Angle changes to triangle. Try this! Add a prefix to ‘try’ to make a word that means try again.
