PREFIX/SUFFIX/SYLLABLES What is a Prefix? A prefix is a group of letters placed BEFORE a root word or another prefix creating a new word. Examples: autograph interaction What is a Suffix? A suffix is a group of letters added to the END of a root word or another suffix creating a new word. Examples: wanted harmless When you add a prefix or suffix to a word, you CHANGE the meaning of that word. Examples: You know what the word ‘read’ means… When you add the prefix re- to the word read, it changes the meaning of the word. Reread means to read again. Now, let’s take the same word, read… When you add the suffix -able to the word read, it changes the meaning of the word. Readable means able to be read. Syllabication Syllabication is to divide a word into syllables. Example: The word exceptional has 4 syllables.
