Study Guide Literal/Inferential/Evaluative

INFERENCES What are Inferences? Making inferences is determining facts and meaning that the author does not directly state. Example: Emma went to work with her Mom on Friday. She played with her Mom’s badge and even got to turn on the red and blue lights and the siren in her Mom’s car. The fact that Emma’s Mom has a badge and a car with sirens and red and blue lights gives us a good idea that Emma’s Mom is a police officer. So, even though the author does not directly state this fact, we can INFER that Emma’s Mom is a police officer. Try This! The cake smelled delicious and the decorations looked amazing. Mom turned off all the lights and everyone hid behind the furniture. Dad was just about to walk in the front door. You can infer: a] They were having a surprise party for their Dad. b] Their Dad was sad. c] Their Dad was late for work. d] Their Dad liked ice cream. © Copyright NewPath Learning.
