Study Guide Fact/Opinion

FACT/OPINION A fact is information that is known to be true; it is a certainty. A fact does NOT change from person to person. An opinion is a personal belief or idea. People do not always have the same beliefs or ideas. Examples: Fact = Ice cream is made with cream and sugar. Ice cream IS made with cream and sugar, so this statement is a fact. You can prove that it is true. Opinion = Strawberry ice cream tastes better than vanilla ice cream. That may be your opinion but it is not EVERYONE’S opinion. It is what you believe. It is not a certainty. Try This! Earth is the third planet from the sun. This sentence is a: a] fact b] opinion Green is a prettier color than brown.
