Study Guide Extraneous Details

EXTRANEOUS DETAILS What are Extraneous Details? Extraneous details are details that are not necessary to include in a particular paragraph. They are details that are NOT related to the theme of a paragraph. Example: My dad makes the most delicious pancakes. He even makes them in different shapes every Saturday morning. My sister is not very hungry. I love the drizzling maple syrup all over the pancakes dad makes. Which sentence above is unrelated or irrelevant to the paragraph’s theme? The answer = ‘My sister is not very hungry.’ This sentence is irrelevant to the topic of the paragraph. Readers do not need to know that the author’s sister is not hungry. All of the other sentences are details about the author’s dad’s delicious pancakes. Try This!
