THE CIVIL WAR 1861-1865 The U.S. was divided over the issue of slavery. The North wanted to abolish slavery. This means they did not want people to be slaves. There was a secret way many Northern people used to help slaves escape. It was called the Underground Railroad. The South had many plantations and they wanted slaves to work on their plantations. Abraham Lincoln became president right before the war. He did not believe in slavery. In 1861, the Civil War began between the Northern states, called the Union, and the Southern states, called the Confederacy. The map below shows how the states were divided. Major battles of the Civil War: Fort Sumter—first battle Battle at Bull Run Vicksburg Antietam Gettysburg Important Events: September 22, 1862 “Emancipation Proclamation” signed by Abraham Lincoln. This freed all slaves in the U.S. November 19, 1863: Lincoln gives his “Gettysburg Address.” It begins, “Four score and seven years ago…” April 12, 1865: General Lee and his Rebel troops surrender at Appomattox Court House.
