Electric Current Electric current is the continuous movement of electric charges through a conductive material. Magnetic Fields A magnet produces a magnetic field in the space around it. A magnetic field is an invisible field which applies a magnetic force on materials attracted to magnets. When a magnet is split in two, each section willl have a north and south pole. N S Magnetic North Magnetic South North Pole South Pole Earth as a Magnet N S The Earth's magnetic field is similar to that of a bar magnet. Earth can be considered a gigantic magnet. Electromagnets An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which a magnetic field is created by running an electric current through a wire. Electromagnets are used in electric motors, computers, and power generators, among other devices. Electric Motors An electric motor uses electrical energy and converts it to mechanical energy to turn a rod or an axle. Generators Changing Magnetism to Electricity Generators produce almost all of our electricity. By burning coal, oil or natural gas, large amounts of water are converted to steam which provides the mechanical energy needed to turn the generators. A series circuit has only one path for the current to flow. + + Electric motors are found in household appliances such as fans, refrigerators, washing machines, and others.
