Flowering plants or angiosperms include deciduous trees, grasses and a vast array of flowering plants from daisies to cacti. They are vascular plants and are found in almost all the land habitats on Earth with more than a quarter million species identified so far. Flowering plants grow flowers that contain male pollen and female ovules inside them. With bright colors, scents and nectar, the flowers attract pollinators that spread their pollen to other blossoms for fertilization. The resulting seeds develop inside a protective fruit. Flowering plants develop fruit not just to protect their seeds, but also to attract animals that will spread their seeds. The fruits may be fleshy like berries that will be eaten or spiny like burrs that will stick to fur. They may also be attached to a spinning propellor or fluffy parachute to be carried off in the wind. All these variations in flowering plant fruits still result in the same goal to spread their seeds away from the parent plant. Flowering plants can be broken down into two groups, the monocots and dicots. Monocots grow one leaf inside their seed, called their cotyledon. Their flowers grow with flower parts in threes (3 petals, 3 sepals, etc.). They have leaves with long, parallel veins. Inside their stems, the vascular tissues are in bundles scattered throughout the stem. Dicots grow two leaves inside their seed, called their cotyledons. Their flowers grow with flower parts in fours or fives (4 or 5 petals, etc.). They have leaves with branching vein patterns. The vascular tissues are in bundles that form a ring around the inside of the stem. one cotyledon (seed leaf) two cotyledons (seed leaves) vascular tissues are in bundles scattered throughout the stem vascular tissues are in bundles that form a ring around the inside of the stem flowers grow with flower parts in threes flowers grow with flower parts in fours or fives leaves with long, parallel veins leaves with branching vein patterns Dicots Monocots Flowering Plants
