The main idea is the most important piece of information the author wants to convey to the reader. Supporting details help to better understand the main idea. Supporting details help to answer who, what, when and where. Sometimes all the information helps to support the main idea. But sometimes all of the information is not needed. Decide what is important and what is extra important. Use only the most important details and information to write a short description of the text. In non-fiction describe which of the four ways it is organized (compare & contrast, main idea, cause & ef fect, and sequence).
