Thirteen
American
colonies
belonging
to
Great
Britain
were
located
along
the
eastern
coast
of

now

United

America.
The
colonies
were
divided
into
three
groups,
based
on
their
locations
and
their
economies.

New
England
Colonies
Location:
in
the
upper,
or
northern,
part
of
the
Thirteen
Colonies
Colonies:
Massachusetts
Bay,
New
Hampshire,
Connecticut,
and
Rhode
Island
Land:
rocky
soil,
hilly
land,
and
short
growing
season
Economy:
based
on
fishing,
trading,
and
shipbuilding

better

soil

the

Colonies,
so
some
people
lived
and
worked
on
farms.

farming

manufacturing

manufactured

weapons,
glass,
and
leather
goods
like
shoes.

Southern
Colonies
Location:
in
the
southern
part
of
the
Thirteen
Colonies

Virginia,
Georgia,
North
Carolina,
and
South
Carolina
Land:
fertile
soil,
long
growing
season
Economy:
based
on
farming
Major
Ports:
Charleston,
Savannah,
and
Baltimore
Other
Important
Information:
Large
farms
located
in
the
Southern
Colonies
were
known
as
plantations.
On
plantations,
crops
like
rice,
indigo,
and
tobacco
were
grown.
Because
of
the
sizes
of
their
plantations,
many
Southerners
relied
on
slave
labor
to
farm
their
land.
Slaves
were
people
who
were
captured
in
Africa
and
forced
to
work
for
free.
