The Middle Colonies Location: between the New England Colonies and the Southern Colonies Colonies: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and New York Land: Soil was better than the soil in the New England Colonies, so some people lived and worked on farms. Economy: based on farming and manufacturing Major Ports: New York City and Philadelphia Other Important Information: Products manufactured were weapons, glass, and leather goods like shoes. The Southern Colonies Location: in the southern part of the Thirteen Colonies Colonies: Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina Land: fertile soil, long growing season Economy: based on farming Major Ports: Charleston, Savannah, and Baltimore Other Important Information: Large farms located in the Southern Colonies were known as plantations. On plantations, crops like rice, indigo, and tobacco were grown. Because of the sizes of their plantations, many Southerners relied on slave labor to farm their land. Slaves were people who were captured in Africa and forced to work for free. © Copyright NewPath Learning. All Rights Reserved.
