MAGNETS What Is a Magnet? A magnet attracts certain kinds of metal. Attract means to pull towards. If something is magnetic, that means it is attracted by a magnet. Different types of magnets This is a bar magnet. This is a horseshoe magnet. A North and South Pole A magnet has two poles, a north and a south pole. The Strength of a Magnet Some magnets are stronger than other magnets. The invisible field around a magnet is called a magnetic field. What Does a Magnet Attract? The north pole on a magnet attracts the south pole of another magnet. The north pole on a magnet repels the north pole of another magnet. Repel means to push away. Magnets attract certain kinds of metal such as iron. Magnet attracts with MORE force when object is CLOSE. Magnet attracts with LESS force if the object is FAR AWAY. Temporary and Permanent Magnets A temporary magnet won’t be magnetic for a long time. A permanent magnet will be magnetic for a long time. Compass A compass is a tool with a small needle that responds to the Earth’s magnetic field by always pointing North.
