Comparing Parts and Wholes In this analogy, the whole is compared to a part: Hand is to fingernail as foot is to toenail. Comparing Shades of Meaning This analogy includes shades of meaning: Angry is to mad as dark is to dim. Angry is a stronger word than mad, just as you can see less in the dark than you can in dim light. Comparing with Synonyms When the analogy compares two things that are alike, it uses synonyms. Synonyms are words that have similar meanings: Own is to possess as find is to discover. Own and possess are synonyms; find and discover are synonyms. Comparing with Antonyms When the analogy compares two things are are opposites, it uses antonyms. Antonyms are words that have opposite meanings: Winter is to summer as tall is to short. Winter and summer are antonyms; tall and short are antonyms. Answers: 1. eyelashes (teeth grow in your gums; and eyelashes grow in your eyelids) 2. sunrise (sunrise starts the morning, and sunset starts the evening) 3. tweet, chirp, sing (note that these are synonyms for bird sounds, so any of them work) An analogy is a comparison of two ideas or things. To solve an analogy, you must first decide on the relationship between the words given. Then, you look for a word to make the other pair in the analogy show the same relationship.
